When to Start Kinder
3-year-old Kinder is for children turning 3 by April 30 or children who are turning 4 years old. 4-year-old Kinder is for children turning 4 by April 30 or children who are turning 5 years old.
To start primary school your child must be 5 by the 30th of April in the year that they start school. Your child must be at school in the year that they turn 6 years of age.
For parents of children born before April 30 deciding when to start school or when to start kinder can be a big decision. Our educators and ECTs are here to guide you. For children already enrolled at John Street our kinder teachers will liaise with the lead educator of the 2 year old program (Toddler Room) and together they can support you in making your decision.
Kinder Funding and the Free Kinder Offset
Kindergarten funding is provided directly from the government to the childcare service that you have nominated. The Government provides the centre with funding to allow the children to access the recommended 15 hours of 3 & 4-year-old Kinder prior to commencing school. The government provides funding to a service based on the number of children enrolled in their kinder program. These funds are allocated directly to the kinder programs and are used for ECT wages, resources and equipment and excursions and in-house learning for the children.
If your child is accessing funded kinder at John St you will be eligible for The Free Kinder Offset funding. If you are eligible for the Childcare Subsidy it will be applied first. That means you will only need to pay the remaining amount of you fees after CCS and after the Free Kinder offset have been applied.
At John Street a booking of two days per week is enough to meet the kinder hours requirement.
