Curriculum, Pedagogy & Practice

Picture
At John Street our programs follow a play-based emergent curriculum. This education philosophy is used widely across the early childhood education sector. This style of educational planning and programming is responsive to children’s interests and developmental needs, and is meaningful, relevant and engaging for each child. Through this approach our educators gain greater understandings of each child's individual development, interests and unique sense of self. This knowledge allows for thoughtful and individualised programming. Educators use the planning cycle to observe, analyse, plan, implement, and reflect.

Educators draw inspiration for activity and experience planning from a range of areas, such as, but not limited to;
- Children’s current interests and knowledge
- Children and family’s goals and aspirations
- Families culture, interests and input
- Educators’ interests and passions
- Educators’ professional knowledge and experience
- The physical and social environment
- Values held within our community

Our programs are inquiry focused. Through play we encourage the children’s innate sense of curiosity and joy though a rage of planned and spontaneous play experiences. We encourage independent play while also offering a range of educator led activities.

Additional Programs

Dancing with Sue
During the school terms John Street Sue runs and immersive creative movement program for children turning 3 and above.
Dancing with Sue runs every Tuesday morning. Sues classes are yoga inspired explorations of movement with a focus on body awareness.
Each week her classes explore a different theme through the use of large scale props and carefully curated music.

Sport
In Term 1 and 4 the Kinder programs enjoy a sport class each Friday.
Little Sports Heroes focus on developing comprehensive sports programs that cater to children in Childcare though group sessions. Through these classes the children's physical development is promoted while they also practice important skills such as teamwork and build self confidence. Their programs are customized to meet the individual needs of each child and group, and our kinder children greatly enjoy their weekly excursion to Frank King Park.

Yoga
On Thursdays we do Yoga with Priyanka. Priyanka has worked at John Street as an educator for over a decade. Dedicated to early childhood education and children’s wellbeing she runs weekly yoga classes with all age groups. Her classes are interactive and teach children to connect their mind, body and spirit through exploring yoga alongside breathing exercises and guided meditation. She includes props and draws on children’s innate sense of curiosity and physical confidence to engage and inspire.
