Our Vision

To create a warm and safe environment to enhance children’s learning through creative play and experience, and to extend connections between a child’s family and community life.

Our Mission

At John Street, our mission is to provide quality education and care for every child in a safe, warm and welcoming environment, to enable children to develop a sense of identity, independence and confidence for their transition to school. It is our commitment to our families:
  • to develop programs based on creative play and exploration;
  • to engage in programs based on observations of children’s development;
  • to encourage inquisitive minds and hands to explore, create and experience;
  • to create an environment focused on social and emotional well-being, along with physical and cognitive development;
  • to understand and build on a child’s own experiences;
  • to encourage curiosity, creativity, and communication skills for individual and group expression;

  • to foster attachment, building respect and sharing from a young age;
  • to celebrate diversity in our centre and with our local community;
  • to strengthen connections between the centre and it’s families;
  • to combine incursions and excursions to encourage awareness of community and activity outside the centre environment
  • to foster research and professional development between John Street programs, with other centres and our parents and families;
  • to commit to sustainable practices that build a respect for the environment;

Our Director

Director: Leanne Robertson
Welcome to John Street,  a family orientated, child focused community in the heart of Fitzroy.
Our centre aims to support children and families, through the most important and crucial learning years of a child's life, through fostering strong, trusting relationships, a holistic approach to development and empowering each child to embrace their individuality and reach their full potential as a valued member of their community.

I believe strongly in the power of relationship building, and understand that a foundation rooted in trust is crucial for creating and maintaining a safe and nurturing environment where children (and families) feel appreciated and heard. I also believe in the power of art, and as someone who embraces creativity in all it's forms, I am excited to be given the opportunity to bring all manner of art experiences and creativity programs to John Street.

I whole heartedly advocate for a collaborative approach at John Street, that brings together children, families and the wider community in a collective learning journey. Being deeply dedicated to the welfare of our John Street family, I feel extremely proud and privileged to work alongside this outstanding team, and to be entrusted with the care and education of such extraordinary children. Together, we are crafting a future where every child flourishes, every family feels supported and every team member is inspired/inspiring.

Under the rules, parents must compromise at least 80% of the membership of the Co-operative at any one time.
